Battle of al-Zallāqah (Sagrajas)

معركة الزلاقة
12 Rajab·23 Oct 1086· DayAttested ·Battle · al-Andalus · Andalusi

When Toledo fell and Alfonso VI's demands turned to open threat, the taifa kings swallowed their rivalries and called the Almoravid amir Yūsuf ibn Tāshfīn across the strait. On Friday 12 Rajab 479, on the field called al-Zallāqah — "the slipping ground" — north of Badajoz, the combined Almoravid and Andalusī army shattered Alfonso's host; the king escaped with a wound and a remnant.

The victory did not retake Toledo, but it stopped the reconquista's momentum for a century and brought al-Andalus under Almoravid rule — the taifa kings having discovered, as al-Muʿtamid famously accepted, that herding camels in Morocco beat herding pigs in Castile.

The Friday and the date are carried consistently in the western chronicles.
