Battle of al-Yarmūk

معركة اليرموك
Rajab 15·≈ Aug 636· MonthAttested ·Battle · Levant · Rashidun

On the ravine-cut plateau above the Yarmūk river, Khālid ibn al-Walīd — recalled from command yet effectively directing the field — led the Muslim army through six days against the great Roman host Heraclius had assembled to retake Syria. The final day's envelopment against the gorges destroyed the imperial army as a force.

The chroniclers give Heraclius a farewell that became proverbial: "Peace be upon you, Syria — and what a fine country you are for the enemy." Damascus, Ḥimṣ and the province settled permanently into Muslim rule, and Jerusalem's surrender followed within the year.

Rajab 15 AH is the standard dating; a 5 Rajab tradition exists but the day is not unanimous, so this entry stays at month precision.
