Abū ʿĪsā Muḥammad al-Tirmidhī, student of al-Bukhārī and compiler of al-Jāmiʿ — the collection distinctive for grading its own material ḥadīth by ḥadīth (ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, gharīb) and for recording which jurists acted on each report — died at Tirmidh on the Oxus on 13 Rajab 279.

His biographers record that he went blind in his last years, weeping, they say, from much writing and fear of God. The Jāmiʿ became one of the six canonical collections, prized precisely for making its judgments visible instead of leaving the reader to guess — a method this database is in no position to disapprove of.

The date is given by the Khurāsānī biographical tradition with the weekday attached.
