ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī — Ḥanbalī jurist, preacher of Baghdad, and the figure to whom the Qādiriyyah order traces its name — died in the city on 11 Rabīʿ al-Thānī 561, aged about ninety, and was buried at his madrasah in the Bāb al-Azaj quarter.

His preaching sessions were an institution of Saljūq-era Baghdad, and collections like Futūḥ al-Ghayb carried his voice far beyond it. Within a few generations his name had travelled with the order across North Africa, the Balkans, and India, making his tomb one of Baghdad's enduring landmarks.

The death date is transmitted with small variance — 8, 9, 10 and 11 Rabīʿ al-Thānī all occur — and this entry records the date kept by the order while noting the spread.
